Geography, Location & Climate

Visitors to Pulau Redang (Redang Island) will never forget the white sand, almost as fine and white as milk powder that forms the long stretches of beaches that dot along the coastline of the island.

The Redang group of islands lie just about 25 km east into the South China Sea from Terengganu, the northeastern state of Peninsular Malaysia.   Redang is renowned for its natural beauty but it is the coral reefs around the off -shore islands that lure thousands of divers every year.  Clear water with warm temperatures around 29∞C is just the best condition for divers to explore the underwater in comfort and ease.

Redang measuring about 7 km long and 6 km wide.  It is generally hilly with its highest point at about 360 m above sea level.  The waters around Redang and its nearby islands of Pulau Lima, Pulau Paku Besar, Pulau Paku Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Besar, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Ling and Pulau Pinang form are designated as Marine Park and is protected against damage from human activities are managed so as to protect the marine environment and to conserve its coral reefs.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Redang is between March and October.  Visibility depends on sea conditions but is generally good.

Dive Sites

With so many islets around Redang, there are numerous dive sites around Redang.  Besides, there are also submerged reefs with rich marine life to entertain divers on every dive.
Among the northern sites, Tanjung Tokong is perhaps the most popular because the coral reefs here are known to be the healthiest in Redang archipelago due to the fact that they are situated away from most resorts.  However, the sea here can get rough at times but divers will be rewarded with the diversity of fishes and other reef life found here.

The house reefs near to Tanjung Tengah and Tanjung Mak Cantik in Pasir Panjang, where most of the resorts are located, are good for snorkeling, shore dive and night dive.

A few minutes away on a speed boat will bring you to the islands of Pulau Paku Besar and Pulau Paku Kecil and the underwater seamounts of Mak Cantik (Maxi Mount) and Chek Isa (Mini Mount).  They are enough to make every diver satisfied!

Off the southern tip of Redang island, Terumbu Kili, a rocky outcrop that appears above water is perhaps one of the top dive sites at Redang.  Divers are always rewarded with schools of snappers and fusiliers, and the occasional reef sharks and turtles.
