Tioman diving guide

A large marine-park island with dozens of dive sites, from sheltered reefs to offshore pinnacles. Most operators open from around March to October and many close during the north-east monsoon.

About diving at Tioman

Tioman is the largest island off Malaysia's east coast and the heart of a marine park with well over 30 dive sites. Jungle-covered peaks drop to beaches and small villages such as Tekek, Air Batang (ABC), Salang and Juara, each with its own character and dive centres.

The variety is what keeps people coming back: easy coral gardens for students, boulder fields full of swim-throughs, current-swept pinnacles for experienced divers, and plenty of turtles along the way. Tioman is also a duty-free island.

  • Tiger ReefAn offshore pinnacle known for soft corals and schooling fish; currents can be strong, so it suits experienced divers.

  • Bumphead parrotfish (occasional)

When to dive

Roughly March to October. During the north-east monsoon (about November to February) seas are rough, ferries run less often and many dive centres close.

Getting there

Ferries run from Mersing (Johor) and Tanjung Gemok (Pahang); crossings take a couple of hours. Check ferry timetables carefully, especially at the start and end of the season.

Who it suits

Every level, from SSI Try Scuba and Open Water Diver students on Renggis to advanced divers on the offshore pinnacles.

Local tips

  • Choose your village: Tekek is the main hub, ABC and Salang are livelier, Juara is quiet on the east coast.
  • A marine park conservation fee is payable on arrival.
  • Bring enough cash — card payments and ATMs are limited outside Tekek.
