Child-friendly dive sites in Malaysia and Singapore, SSI age rules for children, and family-friendly places to stay.
The best places to dive or snorkel with children have calm, shallow water, short boat rides and resorts with facilities for families. Most of these are on Malaysia’s east coast, with Kota Kinabalu as the year-round choice.
Sheltered, shallow reefs and a short boat ride from the Johor coast — the easiest family dive trip from Singapore.
Family-friendly places to stay
Sea Gypsy Village Resort & Dive Base — A long-standing family favourite with its own dive base, family chalets and a much-praised kids' club for children from about four, with evening activities so parents get a quiet dinner.
Rimba Resort – Dive Centre & Spa — A smaller resort with an on-site dive centre, where visiting families report children doing their first discovery dives.
There is no public ferry to Pulau Sibu — resorts arrange the boat from Tanjung Leman jetty.
Turtles in the shallows and calm bays; Perhentian Besar is the quieter island for families.
Family-friendly places to stay
Perhentian Island Resort — A long-established resort on Perhentian Besar with a snorkelling reef right off its beach, where turtles and small reef sharks are often seen.
BuBu Villa — Family villas on Perhentian Kecil for families who prefer a livelier beach with more restaurants.
Most families choose Perhentian Besar, which is quieter than Kecil.
Mabul — Calm house reefs, but slow macro diving and a long journey via Tawau suit older children who are already certified.
Semporna — Great for certified older children on the calmer reefs; keep Sipadan for experienced divers.
Miri — Short boat rides to patch reefs suit certified older children; sea conditions vary.
Brunei-Muara — Pelong Rocks is sheltered and suits young certified divers; the wrecks are for experienced adults.
Pulau Hantu — Low visibility and busy waters — better for certified older children who already dive comfortably.
Pulau Aur — Rewarding reefs but a long, often rough crossing — best for older children who travel well by boat.
Pulau Dayang — Same long crossing as Pulau Aur and very basic facilities — better for older children.
Not suitable for children
Pulau Tenggol — Deeper sites and currents make it a destination for experienced divers rather than children.
Sipadan — Deep walls and strong currents — experienced divers only; families can stay on Mabul and snorkel instead.
Labuan — The famous wrecks are deep and need advanced training.
Sisters' Islands Marine Park — Diving has been suspended for restoration; families can visit Big Sister's Island on foot.
When to go
The east-coast islands — Pulau Sibu, Tioman, Redang and the Perhentians — are at their best from about March to October, and most resorts close for the north-east monsoon from roughly November to February. Kota Kinabalu dives year-round, and Langkawi’s season runs roughly November to April.
Safety tips for families
Choose an SSI centre with experience teaching children, and ask about instructor-to-child ratios.
Keep first dives and snorkels short, shallow and fun — stop while children are still enjoying it.
Use well-fitting masks and children’s fins, and a snorkel vest for young snorkellers.
Protect children from the sun with rash guards and reef-safe sunscreen.
Teach children never to touch turtles, corals or marine life.

Frequently asked questions
What age can children start scuba diving?
With SSI, children can try scuba from age 8 in a pool or confined water and take the Open Water Diver course from age 10. Divers aged 10 and 11 are limited to 12 m, and junior divers dive with an adult.
Which dive destination in Malaysia is best for children?
Pulau Sibu, Tioman (around Renggis Island), Redang, the Perhentian Islands and Kota Kinabalu's island park all have calm, shallow reefs and short boat rides, which makes them the most child-friendly choices.
Where can families dive between November and February?
Most east-coast islands close for the north-east monsoon. Kota Kinabalu dives year-round, and Langkawi's west-coast season runs roughly November to April.
Can young children snorkel?
Yes. SSI Snorkel Diver has no minimum age. Use a well-fitting mask and a snorkel vest, stay in calm, shallow water and keep children within arm's reach.
Which places are not suitable for children?
Sipadan, Pulau Tenggol and Labuan's wrecks involve depth or strong currents, and diving at Sisters' Islands is currently suspended. These are for experienced adult divers.
Do children need a medical check before diving?
Every scuba participant completes a medical questionnaire, and some conditions need a doctor's approval first. Your SSI centre will guide you.
