Sipadan diving guide

A world-renowned oceanic island with sheer walls, turtles and schooling fish. Diving requires one of a limited number of daily permits, arranged through licensed operators.

About diving at Sipadan

Sipadan is an oceanic island rising from very deep water off Sabah's east coast, and one of the world's most famous dive destinations. Steep walls start just metres from the beach, so divers drop straight from coral into the blue.

To protect the island, overnight stays ended years ago and diving is controlled by a limited number of daily permits, widely reported as around 120 a day and allocated through licensed operators based on Mabul, Kapalai and in Semporna.

  • The Drop OffA wall right off the jetty that plunges into the deep — a breathtaking introduction to Sipadan.
  • Turtle CavernAn underwater cave system known for turtle remains. It is an overhead environment entered only by suitably trained divers with a guide.
  • South Point and Hanging GardensSites known for large schools of fish, soft corals and the chance of bigger visitors.

Marine life to look for

  • Green and hawksbill turtles
  • Chevron barracuda schools
  • Bigeye trevally
  • Bumphead parrotfish
  • Whitetip and grey reef sharks
  • Soft corals and sea fans

When to dive

Year-round; conditions vary, and permit availability is usually the bigger limitation than weather.

Getting there

By boat from Mabul or Kapalai (short ride) or from Semporna (longer ride). Your operator arranges the permit.

Who it suits

Certified divers with good buoyancy and some experience — many operators prefer Advanced-level divers with recent dives because of currents and depth.

Local tips

  • Book well ahead and ask how many Sipadan days your package guarantees.
  • Do a few check-out dives on Mabul or Kapalai first.
  • Watch your depth: the walls make it easy to sink deeper than planned.

Learning to dive at Sipadan

Visiting divers usually join an SSI centre for guided dives or courses such as SSI Open Water Diver and Advanced Adventurer. Check each centre’s dates and what its packages include.
